motivation. {and lots of projects}. project completion #1- hexi quilt, doll quilt & pillow.

so i wrote this post back in august....

apparently it takes making a BIG, HUGE mess to get me motivated to get a bunch of projects done.  that, and a deadline.  like, oh, maybe a baby coming and not wanting unfinished projects sitting around collecting dust and taking up space anymore.

(the floor is an example of what happens when you cut a bunch of quilt pieces and leave them on the floor in order of how you'd like to sew them, and then sleep in while your kids watch shows in the morning.  zach was pretty proud that he "messed up" mommys' "stuff". FORTUNATELY my kids have always been good about not touching mommy's "stuff" when i have it on my table!)

it seems i have a bit of ADD when it comes to sticking to one task and getting accomplished.  NO, i'd rather go all out and drag EVERYTHING out in one big crazy pile and try to get it all done at once.

i finally finished olivia's hexi quilt that i started last july. i have made a few simple quilts before and got it into my head {thanks to lots of surfing on pinterest} that i wanted to attempt to make one of the most tedious and time-consuming quilts out there.  a COMPLETELY BY HAND english paper piecing hexi quilt!

it was EXACTLY what i had been looking for to complete Olivia's room and set the tone for the vintage vibe that i wanted her room to have.  the key pieces in her room are the dollhouse i refinished and this quilt.  all the colors tie all of the little details together.

the top of the quilt before i added the pink flannel backing:

and the finished product!!!

i used a mixture of fabrics in this quilt and i love the results! my mom has sent me several vintage fabrics over the years which i have been collecting but was never quite sure what to do with them.  when i saw a quilt that mixed old and new designs i knew right away what i wanted!

and then i fell in love with the "vintage modern" series by MODA at porter's.  appropriately named, right?  exactly the look i was going for.  for around $40 i had all the fabric i needed for her quilt and binding, as well as a lot of remnants left over for other projects!

i only wish i had more since the line was discontinued...WHY DO THEY DO THAT?  good things should be available forever!

i had some  miscellaneous other fabrics i threw in as well and had gotten some cotton batting for free from my aunt linda, as well as some pink flannel.  so all in all, a quilt i am quite proud of, that i hope will become an heirloom piece for my daughter for $40 and a YEARS' WORTH OF EFFORT!!!

after i finished her quilt i was so super excited!  i was motivated to finish the other little projects her room has been waiting for!

my grandpa morgan, who the kids call Papa made olivia (and ALL of his great-granddaughters) these adorable doll beds and dressers. i had some bedding i had made for an older doll bed i had for olivia back when she and brady had a cowboy/cowgirl room.  i decided to re-vamp the dolly bedding and whipped up a little hexi blanket for her. man was that EASY compared to her quilt!

couldn't stop there- the baby dolls also got a little mattress and a cute pillow (the pillow insert i have had since olivia was BORN, a find for $1 at D.I.) finally put to its' intended use. sheesh.

love. love. love accomplishing things (like this post 6 months after the fact!!!)

feeling human again. (written at the beginning of june...) moving and packing tips.

finally i am back in my groove.  i am so grateful for this.  it is so awful to feel so inhuman when you're incapacitated with morning sickness {ie: all day sickness} and crippling fatigue.  i feel incredibly blessed to have felt better within a few weeks of making this big move and even more blessed to continue to feel well and to have gotten everything unpacked so quickly.  by day 3 we were very much settled in!

this is our 14th move in 11 years, i kind of consider myself a little bit of an "expert" on moving by now. in case anyone else may find it helpful i thought i'd include a few tips of how i organize, pack and get unpacked quickly.  there's nothing like making a fast transfer so your days of limbo can be limited.  it's so much more settling for everyone when everything is back in its' place and your new home actually FEELS like home.

whenever we know we're moving i always start to begin packing non-essentials as soon as i can. usually i have 2 weeks notice-1 month.  this last time we had 3 months, which i'm sure helped a lot since we were still dealing with sicky momma, lots of house and landscape projects, finding renters etc.  luckily, between a hugely helpful husband (when i saw him for about 24-48 hours every weekend) and a wonderful mom who flew across country to stay with me and the kiddos for a WHOLE MONTH to help out!  my father-in-law, dan was a HUGE help in assisting us with our main bathroom remodel. after chris got the bathroom tile surrounding the tub and floor demolished he came and helped us figure everything out and helped tile it and grouted the floor for us.  my mom was a champ and grouted the shower for me.  my mother-in-law julie also helped out a ton too as we got yard work and house cleaning done.

so, i begin packing away anything unnecessary in every room, clear a space in the garage (or pick an available space if you have one that can be dedicated to mounting boxes).  like things go in like boxes, no just throwing whatever in with whatever.  that seems like common sense, but you'd be surprised by how many people just start throwing things in boxes!  no wonder it takes forever to find everything!

step1- i always start with closets right away.  get everything out of there that isn't going to be worn in the immediate future.  i pack my clothes in a box and chris' clothes in his own box.  when i can, i stick belts, jewelry and shoes in as well.  I try to limit us each to one big box when we move (this is clothing that has been hung or is laid on shelving like our sweaters).  other clothing stays in the drawers, for everyone.  on moving day, we take the drawers out, move the dresser into the moving truck and then put the drawers back in.  same when we unload truck.  clothes are already where they need to be on move-in day!  i have 1 large black heavy-duty trash bag that i stick all of the hangers in.  I label each black trashbag with a strip of masking tape and black sharpie marker.  i usually have all the clothes hung up by day 1 or 2 of move-in.

step2- after closets i usually move on to books and children's toys.  pick out everything the kids don't play with on an every day basis.  usually that means that they have a small pile of books, Legos, and a couple of other toys left out for the duration until we move.  this is a great time to consider which books and toys you can haul off to DI or sell in a yardsale if you are having one.

i keep my kids' toys in plastic storage bins, ranging in size from small-xlarge depending on the toy. everything is labeled and has a picture so older and younger kids know where to put their toys away.  i have been lucky enough to use the same moving boxes since we first moved from Twin Falls to Idaho Falls (they have lasted us 4 moves now...) they are sturdy boxes a friend got us for free from a box factory there and i have tried to re-pack the same items in the same sized boxes according to their labels.  the same size boxes that i have used for mine and chris' clothes i also use for toys, books and games.  i take the toys out of the plastic containers and double-bag them in a grocery bag.  then i can stack the containers inside each other in the box and stuff the toys in and around them.  doing it this way i am able to utilize one box to pack anywhere from 4-6 boxes of toys.

step3- decorations.  again, i start in the master bedroom and kids' rooms because that's where i've already been focusing my attention.  i just take down their pictures and decorations in their room and put items from one room in one box.  if there is extra space i'll look for little things that belong in those rooms, like misc. toys that didn't already get boxed up or roll up a few items of their clothing just to secure the items in the box from moving around.  typically i only use bubblewrap on kitchen items and glass decor.  most of the time i can pack the kids' pictures back to back so the glass can't break and their decor tight enough that nothing can move around and break.  if it's fragile, mark it so!  each kiddo gets to pick ONE stuffed animal to keep out through moving day, the others go into another large black trash bag labeled stuffed animals.

so bedrooms become pretty bare.  just clothes that need to be worn hanging in closet, bedding and dressers with clothes inside.  i usually leave one lamp in the master bedroom and pack up everything in our nightstands that is not needed.

on moving day the rest of the clothes in the closet get moved in an overnight bag.  i usually wash everyone's bedding the day of the unpacking part of the move.  if i can't get to it right away then we have sleeping bags that are easily accesible.  it is soooo nice having all the beds set up with freshly laundered linens.  each bed and it's entirety of bedding gets thrown in it's own black trash bag and labeled.  put their pillows in too.

couch pillows all go in one bag.  extra blankets in bags...you get the picture.  it's helpful to have these black trashbags full of squishy items to pack in and around things, as well as to stack on top of items that can't take a lot of weight or that are awkward, like couches or pianos.

step4- move on to other home decor and pictures.  i have a large, tall box (about 3') that I put large picture frames and wall hangings in.  usually this goes in the back of the car with me on moving day. any other decor items that are awkward to pack (like wreaths, globes, shutters, mirrors) i usually put in a pile in an area of things that will go with me instead of taking up a lot of space to pack.

when packing decor use extra towels and rags to wrap things in.  like i said before, if you pack things tightly they can't move around and are less likely to break.  you can use styrofoam plates in between kitchen plates.  i usually wrap glasses in bubblewrap.

by packing in stages like this its' less overwhelming.  if you have the time you can focus on one room a day.  we had a large house in idaho falls with about 3600 sq. feet and i had a LOT of stuff because i'd been "collecting" items to refinish and sell.  i had a LOT of things to go through and subsequently had to take much more time taking pictures of items and selling them online and doing a huge yardsale.  i also went through ALL of my craft and sewing items and seriously got rid of probably 80% of it.  i knew that most things i just didn't care about anymore.  any projects i really still wanted to do i packed in the drawers of my entertainment dresser.  i allowed myself several fruit boxes of unfinished items to be done within the year, a box of kids' craft items, ONE plastic bin of fabric (yeah this was HARD!  this was also other than the fabric i had stored in the drawers for specific projects).  anyhow, i seriously decluttered and downsized the amount of items we had and IT FELT SO GOOD!

step5- just keep at it!  every day try too accomplish a task; whether it be kitchen cabinets, cleaning a room or packing specific boxes.  as i pack i also clean.  it makes moving day so much easier!  wipe baseboards, blinds and ceiling fans down.  wash any spots on walls and spackle/paint touch-up where needed.

i'm really not an expert of course, but these are things that have really helped me.

on moving day make sure to take charge and let people know where things go.  have every box go where it's supposed to go!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so here we are, in Tooele, Utah!  a place i never thought we'd live!  i had imagined moving somewhere in the salt lake valley whenever i thought of moving down here, which was pretty much inevitable for Chris' career path.  anyhow, when reality hit i knew the valley just wasn't the place for me.  not the environment where i personally wanted to raise my family, even if for a short time.  too crowded, too busy, too much concrete!

we were so lucky to have friends, chad and candice hymas that we had been neighbors with in Twin Falls who had now moved to Tooele.  they had been renting a townhouse for a year and a half and just bought another house there.  we had been in contact through facebook and i asked her about the townhouse.  at the time we were looking at a large home comparable to ours in west jordan.  it turned out to be a scam, which i had a bad feeling about from the beginning.

i wanted specific things in our new place in utah.  first and foremost i did not want to spend more money than our current budget in idaho falls for a rental, even though we would be renting our place in IF for several hundred more dollars.  this was a tall order.  housing in utah is typically 48% higher than in idaho!  to keep within this budget i even looked at 2 and 3-bedroom apartments that offered ammenities like storage to make it workable.  i did not want to be over $1000 since utilities would also run more expensive in utah.  the goal of this process was to continue to become debt-free over the coming 1-2 years, so living below our means was very important to us.

moving out of the valley was not only attractive to me for my personal purposes of not feeling like i could be at home there, but also because rentals were much more affordable.  it just so happened that chad and candice's place was actually exactly what we'd been looking for- a garage for storage, a separate family room for more living space and place for toys, crafts and guests. a deck AND a patio so we could continue to enjoy outdoor living with our grill and patio table in the summertime, our own fenced in backyard and more than 1 bathroom.  those were my requirements and i feel like God actually handed this place to us!

it's a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bathroom, 3-level townhouse with a walk-out daylight basement with sliding glass doors in the family room to a patio into the backyard and a deck off the kitchen with sliding glass doors. the kitchen is small and not evenly remotely as nice and wonderful as my newly remodeled kitchen in idaho falls (ahhhh.....) BUT it is open and bright and sunny.  it works, my whole 2 feet of counter space =) and i am actually really enjoying cooking on a gas stove.

the backyard has a beautiful view of the stansbury mountains in the great salt lake and we have gorgeous views of the mountains from the front of the house, specifically the master bedroom, which is small, but also works just fine.

another post with pictures of the place coming soon....one more small project to finish the living room before i can take pics!

response to my daydreamin' post.

yesterday i posted on my blog about some of my daydreams. tonight chris and i were looking at it and talking about it. our dreams couldn't be farther apart. sometimes it makes me ponder how opposites really do attract and how somehow, someway we seem to make our lives TOGETHER work out.

he hates my vintage camper. boo, i'm getting one anyway.

he does not want to live in "the middle of nowhere" in some "spooky house inhabited by people on the other side of the veil." direct quote. oh well. i still have a way of persuading him into seeing what i see. it's worked before anyways, maybe it could work again?

like i said, it's going to take a LOT of convincing to get those chickens! he said the only chickens that he's going to have are in a KFC bucket. lol, at least he makes me laugh

deuteronomy chapters 5-9.

Moses begins by reminding the people that the Lord had made a covenant with them personally and that they had heard His voice out of the midst of fire.

the Lord had given them the commandments (vs. 7-21) and the people were afraid because they heard the Lords' voice and knew that this did not happen to very many people.  instead of being grateful and amazed at this great mercy and miracle, they were afraid that because they had heard the Lord's voice he would destroy them.  the Lord of course is disappointed in the people and laments that if they would only listen they would be well, as would their children and generations forever (vs. 29).

Moses entreats the people to teach their children diligently (ch. 6 vs. 2) and to remember the commandments and the gospel as they make it a constant part of their lives.  "And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes, And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on they gates" (vs. 8 and 9).

the people actually did write gospel doctrines and commandments on smaller pieces of paper that were then rolled or folded up and put in a locket of sorts (frontlet) and then worn around their foreheads, symbolic of constantly remembering what the Lord has given us and taught us and being foremost on our minds.  God meant this to be symbolic, but the people took it literally after their return from Babylon (after the time of Moses and these children of Isreal) and created new laws to wear frontlets or phylacteries (small boxes containing selected verses of the law).  today many Jews still take part in this custom.

the Lord would continue to cause miracles for those who continued to follow Him; but for those who did not and forgot Him, He would cause to perish, just as He would cause to perish other nations and people that stood before the Israelites.  Moses reminds the people that it is not because of their righteousness that the Lord has blessed them; they have angered the Lord through their rebellion and stiffneckedness.  they turned from Him when He gave them the commandments and other miracles.  when Moses received the written tablets of the 10 commandments upon the mount he had previously prayed 40 days and 40 nights while fasting with no bread and no water for the people that God would spare them and not destroy them, remembering his covenants to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. (ch. 9)

i can't help but compare us today to the children of Israel again.  God has covenanted with us and we have covenanted with Him to keep His commandments and always remember Him; yet we falter, and forget and sometimes rebel.  this is why we have His atonement, to turn His anger from us when we are willing to humble ourselves and follow Him again.

it is easy to read the bible and the overview of the children of Israel and question why they couldn't just believe, and have faith and follow.  yet we have a prophet living today that guides and leads us and we struggle to follow as well.  it is human nature, the carnal man.  there is a saying by Alexander Pope (1688-1744), that "to err is human, to forgive is divine."  i say, "to err is human, to repent {and change} is divine."

day dreamin.'

obviously a totally random post, when i should be taking pictures of our new pad {er cleaning, so i can take pictures}...but i can't stop thinking about a few things.  it's like i have ADD right now and i'm blaming it all on becoming a renter again.  i'm {mostly} unpacked and decorated.  sure there are plenty of things to do {like make my kids lunch} or {do my scripture study}...but i have these ideas in my head and i have more "free" time right now to daydream?...

i have several short-term goals for the next year or two.  first of all is making a baby...currently halfway done with that process and going good =)  baby boy will arrive sometime mid-september. mommy feeling much better these days and actually not very pre-occupied with thoughts of his  arrival. baby #4 just kind of seems to blend into our lives more...sorry fella but it's just the truth.  we are non-the-less excited, but i got this.  i'm not crazy busy reading birth stories or "how to" books.  i've got pretty much everything i need and there's no nursery to prepare.  this little one will have his claim on a bassinet by my side of the bed and that's all the space he gets here in this little home.

goal #2- get out of debt.  we've been working on this for years, but i'm still not quitting.  after seeing some actual progress during the past 6 months i have new hope and am rededicated to living a lifestyle below our means so we can make this a reality.  by the next time we move i want to be in a different financial situation, free and clear from paying others for things we have.  i just imagine everything we could do and buy and how much we could save every month if we weren't paying more than a double-mortgage toward debt!  oh to be free and clear, free and clear.  you may hear me shouting from the mountaintops when it happens.  this months' motivation is that we will be student loan debt-free next month!  ahhhh....

next up?  i really and super seriously dreaming of a vintage camper restoration.  i forsee us renting for the next several years.  this girl needs a project and i have wanted one for a loooooog time, even before it was the *popular* thing.  when i was a little girl i loved all of the vintage blankets and baubles at my grandmothers' houses and the pretty things my mom had on her china hutch.  as a teenager i began a little obsession with vintage VW buses.  everytime my best friend and i saw one we had to take a picture to add to our little dream scrapbook.  i am still in love with VW buses and would absolutely love to have one some day but hubby does not share the same interest (not even a smidge) and i have decided that acquiring and restoring a vintage camper would be more of a middle ground and quite awesome for our family.

i used to think that people who used campers for camping were sissies.  then i moved out west. camping out west is just a different ballgame.  like, you know- grizzly bears running right through your campsight...yeah, not very fly with me and yes, that actually happened!

i started scouring craigslist for campers several years ago and was actually quite shocked at the prices for even 70's yucky campers that were just complete eyesores!  enter in my new love for restoring vintage campers.  shasta, serro scotty, roadrunner....there are a ton more, but if it was made in the 60's i love it.  the 70's, well things started getting ugly. so, i really, really want a vintage camper.  i want to pay less than $1000 for one.

*sidenote:* when brady was 2 years old we actually lived in a camper for 6 months...no joke!

i have narrowed down what i want and it's either aqua or red and white on the outside...

and that picnic blanket is so beautiful and i love those patio lights as well...
(pictures from here)

i like the idea of having an awning, but not sure i'd ever get around to it and i certainly wouldn't pay to have one made, those buggers are super expensive!!! and i'm pretty sure we would never have a resident flamingo. (original post of this one pic was on a for sale site, but i got the pic from here).

the inside of this camper is almost exactly what i have envisioned!  i would paint the interior a crisp white though and seal it with lots of poly for durability.  the color scheme, polka dots, pennant banner, vintage fan, checked floor and robin's egg blue stove...oh my i love it so much!

(pictures from here)

i dream of a black and white checkered linoleum floor just like the above (i like that it has a texture to it) and red, aqua, blue and white accents. think vintage inspired independence day.  quilts and afghans, pennant banners, maybe some baubles {NO ruffles}. yup it's going to be pretty dang amazing.

and it has to have a full - queen bed for me and chris, an overhead bunk and a table seating area that also transforms into a bed.  i would LOVE either a red, white or robin's egg blue/aqua stove.  none of those avocado green or icky brown stoves...eeek.  i know you can get stoves powder coated but it's also the look i'm going for.  in the 60's everything still had that retro rounded look and then for some reason in the 70's everything became brown or green and angular.

i love this row of hanging mugs over the sink...

last goal, maybe not for the next 2 years.  i'm thinking more like within the next 3-5 years...i want a farmhouse.  yes, i do.  with acreage (not TOO much) but enough to be secluded, have trees, a pond

space to run and play, chickens and children to roam...(gonna be a LOT of convincing to get chickens).  i want to have gardens and fruit trees and an awesome barn and tire swings and flowing water and starry nights.  oh that would be bliss.  i can't do the "see your neighbor" from your bathroom thing.  it doesn't work for me.  there is so much space out there, why do "they" insist on cramming everyone in like sardines.  what a waste.

love this, but think shutters, thicker siding and chunkier columns on porch and mouldings around windows.  i like a blend between farmhouse and craftsman styles. i'm also not really into tin roofs, but i suppose they last a long time and it does sound cool when it rains...and look at those pendant lights on the porch!

 (pic from here)

am i the only one who can see the amazing potential of this place?!

(pic from here)

these places are just going to become dust if no one comes along and restores them. they just don't make houses like this anymore.  i mean, actually it makes me really mad the kind of cheap, builder's grade, slapped together houses that are springing up everywhere.  it's a slap in the face to real craftsmen.

i's sure chris thinks i'm absolutely crazy and he might never, ever concede to an undertaking like these...he almost couldn't fathom the remodel that we did on our 1970's house in IF, but look how that turned out!

a place like this one has a different look with a color scheme i really like.  i'm not sure if i would want color though as i think i lean more towards traditional white and brick...

look at how this 106-year old dilapitated farmhouse was saved and restored back to its' rightful glory!
it had sat vacant for 25 years, and that was after it had been split into 6 different apartment units...

(i definitely would have removed that weird little window that's off from everything else...kind of throws things for me, but what an amazing job!)

deuteronomy. chapters 1-4.

"what's the book of Deuteronomy about?" the Sunday school teacher asked...no hands, no responses.  i felt awkward, sad, that i could not speak out as others around me seemed to falter as well.  i am a latter-day saint, i am preparing myself and my family to usher in the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ, surely i should know the scriptures better.  surely i should have known what the book {and other books} for that matter in the scriptures teach us.  if i do not know, then how can the scriptures affect my life.  how can i follow the teachings when i don't know what the teachings are.

Deuteronomy. i don't know...another book in the Bible.

the lesson- "Lest ye forget..."  I cannot forget what i do not know.  i cannot progress if i do not learn.

yesterday i felt a simple yet strong need to repent, by which i mean that i need to change my ways.  how many, many things do i place before me to occupy my time instead of enriching myself with gospel study?  how often have i taken for granted my PRIVILEGE and OPPORTUNITY to have the FULLNESS of the gospel at my fingertips.  "what are you doing with that privilege?" my Relief Society teacher question.

yesterday we attended our new ward here in tooele for the first time.  i could't help feeling a nervousness at starting new again and a sadness at leaving familiarity and ward family behind in idaho.  but yesterday, i was exactly where the Lord needed me to be.  i NEEDED to hear the things that were taught to me by my instructors and through the Spirit especially.

i need to do better.  much, much better.  the Lord expects it of me.  i have a great responsibility ahead, i can feel it and i need to prepare.  i need to become a scholar of the scriptures and the gospel.  i need to be able to share the gospel readily.  the Spirit can only teach through me if i know what i am talking about, if i have testimony, if i have done my part to prepare.

"please, brothers and sisters, i urge you to go home and read Deuteronomy.  fall down in prayer to your Father in Heaven and evaluate what you need to do in your lives to follow the commandments He teaches us here."

i listened.  i began reading today, and *wow*, i am humbled.

Deuteronomy is the 5th and final book of Moses, taking place approximately 40 years after the Israelites were brought out of Egypt by God.  This book is a result of Moses being called upon by God to make a final recitation to the children of Israel of all that befell them during their 40 years in the wilderness and what the Lord expects of them as they enter the land of promise.

Deuteronomy 1:  Moses is nearing the end of his life.  He has been traveling and travailing in the wilderness for almost 41 years with the people of Israel.  "why don't they listen?  why do they so easily forget the Lord?  why can't they seem to acknowledge the hand of the Lord in their lives?" we may all ask.  common gospel doctrine discussion of how "naughty" the people of Israel where....really?  i don't think we're studying the children of Israel.  no, not really, we're studying us.  yup, us.  "why don't WE listen?  why does it takes us so long to see the hand of the Lord in  OUR lives?  why can't we remember?"

Moses is reminding the people that the Lord gave them the opportunity soon after leaving Egypt to enter a land of inheritance, but the people were afraid to enter the land, to follow the instructions of the Lord. They doubted that God would protect them (ch 1: 19-33).

vs. 29 "...Dread not, neither be afraid of them." (meaning those in the Lands that they would have to conquer to possess the land). vs. 30 "The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that He did for you in Egypt before your eyes; (31) And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bare his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into place. (32) Yet in this thing ye did not believe in the LORD your God, (33) Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in cloud by day."

God had provided all for them and they still did not believe that he would protect them if they followed his instructions in entering the land of inheritance.  how do we not believe that God will protect and provide for us?  how often do we doubt His hand?

Because they refused to exercise faith in God 39 years earlier when he gave them the opportunity to inherit a land he had provided for them, all Israelites who were adults at that time- except Moses, Joshua, and Caleb- would die in the wilderness before inheriting their land of promise. This is one main reason why it took 39 years of the people living in the wilderness before they were able to receive the promise of a land that was provided for them!

The new generation of Isrealites had exhibited faith in God and were prepared to now enter the land of promise, which Moses knew he would not enter, as the Lord had told him he wouldn't.  He is as a parent, soon to pass on, who needs to tell His children everything He feels He has failed to teach them, and was given the opportunity by the Lord to instruct the people before they would pass on before him.

He taught the people in the land of Moab, just east of the Jordan River and the promised land, after which Moses was translated, or taken into heaven without tasting death (see Alms 45:19)

use your scriptures, footnotes, gospel manuals and other LDS resources to understand the scriptures better.  I am able to grasp and retain information better when I glean from several sources and take notes for my future reference.  this post will be long and word-heavy for sure, but it's mostly for me to be able to understand the scriptures and teach my children.  i want to draw parallels between the scriptures and the latter-days.  it helps me understand the relevance as to why we have all of the historical information in the scriptures and what we can learn personally from these histories of peoples.

The first four chapters of Deuteronomy are a "remembering" of Israelite history.  According to the Bible Dictionary, the word Deuteronomy means "repetition of the law."

On over TWENTY occasions in Deuteronomy, Moses tells the people to REMEMBER, REMEMBER LEST YE FORGET, or FORGET NOT the teachings they have received.  are we not the same?  are we not CONSTANTLY REMINDED what we have been taught?  remember, remember.  what can i do to remember?  obviously the natural man needs to take extra steps to remember what we have been taught.

some of the things we talked about yesterday in Sunday School to help us remember were all of the standard answers like Family Home Evening, personal and family prayer, scripture study, church and class attendance, temple attendance, wearing and honoring our garments...standard, typical answers.  but completely necessary for us TO DO in order to REMEMBER. how often do we NOT DO these things?  they are simple and they are required of us.

again, i say i was humbled by the simplicity of the things i need to BE DOING.

Remembering also entails seeing the hand of God in our lives and REMEMBERING it.  How often does he bless us and we forget?  How often do we feel neglected by God when it is us, who have neglected Him?  If we would open our eyes and see around us all that we have and are...with nothing extra provided us, we are so blessed far and above so many others! but we are provided with extra, so much extra.

Israelite blessings
manna, water stricken from a rock, raw meat to eat safely in the wilderness, clothing that lasted them, guidance by fire and cloud...complete guidance and instruction by God of how to conquer their enemies and receive lands that God Himself had provided for them.

blessing of posterity
vs. 10- the first promise "the Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude (TG seed of Abraham). vs. 11 (The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)"

blessing of good leadership/structure
i also want to touch on something i see as a blessing in moses' leadership as we speak of the great multitude of people he was leading.  he goes on to state in vs. 12 "How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?"

Moses then organizes the people in leadership, captains over 1000's, 100's, 50's, 10's and officers among the tribes (vs. 13-17).  He teaches the people to choose wise and prominent leaders among their tribes, men who feared God.  He organized judges who would deal justly, unbiased.

i love how the Lord prepared Moses to be a leader through his upbringing as a prince of Egypt. Moses had been prepared in the courts of Egypt and had gained much experience in military and other responsibilities (Acts 7:22- "And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds")  Politics must have been a major portion of his training.  When he became a shepherd he undoubtedly spent thousands of hours caring for his sheep, and most certainly realized the striking resemblance between people and sheep (as David does in psalms 23).  He was also humble, unconcerned with wordly wealth and comforts and more concerned with relationships with God and others.  These skills, directed by a strong relationship with God, made Moses a model leader of people.

He delegated to others to lead and resolve conflicts that he did not need to be involved in, but the biggest and most important conflicts he would preside over when necessary (Deut. ch 1. vs. 17).

He also listened to the guidance and advice from others, such as his father-in-law Jethro, who wisely counseled him to organize the people into self-governing groups (Exodus 18:13-27).  I liken this to our prophet, Joseph Smith who said, "I teach them [the people] correct principles and they govern themselves" (quoted by John Taylor, Millenial Star, 15 Nov. 1851, p. 339- www.lds.org)

this makes me want to digress upon another subject i need to learn more about and get better at implementing, and that is teaching my children to govern themselves with correct principles.  for another day of study...

returning back to the organization of leadership, it was brought to my attention during a lesson in idaho falls several weeks ago that Joseph Smith also paralleled Moses' strategy when he organized Zion's Camp in groups of 50's and 10's, with a captain over each.  It was during Zion's Camp that true unity and loyalty was formed amongst the brethren who endured those hardships, and out of which the new leadership and structure of the church was formed with the formation of the Twelve Apostles, all of which men who were called had participated in Zion's Camp.

i am sure it was the same with their journeying in the wilderness, that the true leadership of the Israelites sprang forth from their hardships during that time.

we see more parallels between the Old Testament leadership of Moses and our latter-day prophet, Brigham Young as described in a talk given by Russell M. Nelson, "The Exodus Repeated" (Ensign, July 1999).  this is all so very interesting to me...

"Brigham Young was likewise prepared for his leadership role. In the march of Zion's Camp he had observed the leadership of the Prophet Joseph Smith under difficult conditions.  [He] aided in the removal of the Prophet Joseph Smith from Kirtland...and directed the move of the persecuted saints from Missouri to Nauvoo.  For both the Israelites and the Saints, civil and ecclesiastical law were unified under one head.  Moses bore that responsibility for his people.

Brigham Young- the modern Moses (D&C 103: 16 "Therefore, I will raise up unto my people a man, who shall lead them like as Moses led the children of Israel") - led the latter-day Saints' movement west, with the Lord's blessing.

Moses and Brigham Young followed parallel patterns of governance (D&C 136: 1-3 "The Word and Will of the Lord concerning the Camp of Israel in their journeyings to the West: Let all the people of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and those who journey with them, be organized into companies, with a covenant and promise to keep all the commandments and statutes of the Lord our God.  Let the companies be organized with captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, and captains of tens, with a president and his two counselors at their head, under the direction of the Twelve Apostles."

Brigham Young then proceeded to organize the large group of men, women, and children for an orderly migration {or EXODUS} to the West.

Nelson goes on to state that: "We lament that leaders of both groups had to endure dissension from their close associates.  On occasion Moses encountered opposition from his beloved Aaron and Miriam (Numbers 12: 1-11).  Latter-day saint leaders also suffered contention among their trusted associates."

are we not asked today to follow our leaders and not participate in murmuring against them?  it is indeed one of our responsibilities.  not to follow blindly, but to uphold those whom the Lord has called.  we can always receive a witness for ourselves when we pray to the lord to soften our hearts if we are experiencing questions or problems with leadership.

"Nevertheless, the same unified pattern of government will come again when the Lord shall be "King over all the earth" (Ps. 47:2) and govern from Zion and Jerusalem."

we will have the same organized leadership under the Savior as he has placed upon the earth today through our prophet and apostles.  i love that it all makes sense.

"The journey from Egypt to Mount Sinai took about three months (Exodus 19:1).  The journey from Winter Quarters to the valley of the Great Salt Lake also took about three months (111 days).  The destination for each group was described by the Lord as a land flowing with milk and honey.  The pioneers turned their wilderness into a fruitful field and made the desert blossom as a rose- precisely as prophesied by Isaiah centuries before (Isaiah 32: 15-16; Isaiah 35:1)."

There are also many miracles that have been shared: "Both groups shared many miracles that are memorialized annually.  The celebration of the Passover [was instituted to commemorate the passing over of the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when God smote the firstborn of the Egyptians, and more generally their redemption from Egypt] (Bible Dictionary).  Each July we repeat legendary stories of our pioneers.  Both groups traversed deserts, mountains, and valleys of untamed wilderness. Ancient Israelites left Egypt via the parted waters of the Red Sea 'as by dry land' (Hebrews 11:29). The pioneers left the United States crossing the wide waters of the Mississippi River- frozen to become a highway of ice."

certainly this is a part of the fulfillment of the gathering of the 12 tribes. in Isaiah 19:23, it states: "In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt."  In 2 Nephi ch. 21 vs. 11, "And it shall come to pass in that day that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea" (simply meaning that the children of Israel had been scattered and are to be gathered by the hand of the Lord).  vs. 12 "And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, (see October 1989 talk by President Gordon B. Hinckley entitled "An Ensign to the Nations" for further understanding) and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth"...vs. 16 "And there shall be a highway for the remnant of his people which shall be left...like as it was to Israel in the days that he came up out of the land of Egypt."

for those who are waiting for the gathering of Israel to take place, it has already begun!  the gathering is not only physical, but also spiritual, as more and more peoples of the world and able to have access to the gospel of Jesus Christ and are coming unto Him spiritually.

Back to Nelson's talk: "The book of Exodus reports that quail were  miraculously provided to feed the hungry people ancient Israel (Exodus 16:13, Numbers 11:32, Ps. 105: 40).  The pioneers had an equivalent experience.  After the last of them had been driven out of Nauvoo, many were sick and some had died.  Their provisions were meager.  On the river bottoms near Montrose, Iowa on 9 October 1846, many quail miraculously flew into camp.  The quail were cooked and fed to some 640 destitute people.  It was also miraculous that a permanent settlement survived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake.  Plagued by crickets destroying their crops, seagulls flew in, ate the insects and became a great miracle among the saints.  God preserved ancient Israel from plagues sent upon Egypt (Exodus 15:26) and similarly, God preserved the Saints from the plague of the crickets, the plague of the United States Civil War, which caused more American deaths than any other war."

Nelson does not go into detail here, i researched this to remember what took place.  i found that the miracle was that preceeding the Civil War there had been a great influx of indians heading in and through the Utah Territory and troops had been stationed there to protect against raids.  Mineral deposits and ore found by soldiers encouraged migration of non-Mormon settlers in Utah.  However, at the onset of the war, the War Department pulled Federal Troops out of the Territory and reassigned them to other regions where they were more immediately needed to quell the brewing rebellion.  The void of military presence in Utah allowed the Church to regain control over their territory, and the Nevada and Colorado Territories sprung forth as a result of trying to organize non-Mormons in the area.

For both the Israelites and the Saints, their trials forged great strength.  i believe this is a main understanding that God is trying to help us "get" through reading these scriptures.  recognize and REMEMBER his hand in our lives and GAIN STRENGTH from our trials!!!  it's a natural process that God uses to strengthen the strong and empower us to endure to the end.

i am committing myself to strive harder to recognize God's hand in my life.  i want to be full of gratitude and have a resulting happier outlook and more positive view of the future.  "For I, the Lord, have put forth my hand to exert the powers of heaven; ye cannot see it now, yet a little while and ye shall see it, and know that I am" (D&C 84:119).  i may not always be able to understand right away but with faith in God all will reveal itself in time.  i have already learned this many times in my life as i look back upon my blessings or how things have worked out in my life and the lives of my family.

when we recognize not His hand in our lives and don't exhibit faith in Him, He will withdraw from us, as He did from the Israelites (Deut. 1:42) "I am not among you."  It will be up to us to repent and take the necessary time to come back unto God.

he has given us the fullness the gospel, just as the children of Israel (Deut. 4: 8) "And what nation is there so great, what hath statutes and judgements so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?" (9) "Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, LEST THOU FORGET the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thine heart all the days of thy life: but teach them..."

girl's camp. kearney 1st ward. "the light within you" 2013. part 1

our girl's camp theme this year was "the light within you" and we focused on the parable of the 10 virgins and filling our lamps with oil.  the last night we had a progressive walk through the woods where the girls visited 10 women that represented foolish or wise virgins.  they each acted out their part and represented such parts as:

"woman of the world"
"woman of contention in her family"
"woman of service"
"woman of patience"

i was the last virgin, "the woman of faith" and i ended the activity as i lit each girl's lantern and then the wise women's lanterns.  i led the girls and women on out of the woods past the foolish virgins whose lanterns were not lit and who were holding their heads down.  as we exited the woods we crossed a bridge over a small river and into a clearing where there was a picture of Christ lit up with a large lantern and a circle of chairs around the fire.  the Bishop shared with us his testimony and opened up the testimony for everyone to follow.  it was very spiritual and really illustrated to the girls the things that they need to work on to avoid being foolish and the qualities to work towards to become wise.

here is the part that i wrote up and "acted out:" (directed towards my young women, and based off the the book of the 10 Virgins)

my sweet sisters,
my lamp is simple, yet elegant.  the Shopkeeper gave me this lamp as a gift, fashioned by His careful hand, unique, suited to my needs.

He knew that i would need this lamp to serve the needs of others around me.  i trust that it's light will burn bright, but it is my responsibility to visit the shopkeeper daily to purchase oil, to receive instruction and glean wisdom at His feet.

if i do not make my daily trek to His shop, i risk running out of oil.  i risk not having enough light to brighten my path and guide me to people in need.

there are days that i visit the Shopkeeper more than once, needing his gentle smile to bring peace to my heart.  i rely on His strength when i feel weak.  i try to never turn AWAY from Him, but to run TOWARDS Him when i am in need.  He comforts me, when i'm alone.

i pray that you will remember to use your lamps, not just to light your own way, but to light the way for others to follow you.  this world can be a dark place, please learn to use your lamps now!

prepare them with oil so they may never run out.  guard your precious light, it is a gift unique to each of you.  to do this, you must visit the Shopkeeper also.  do not get too busy that you forget. do not procrastinate the journey.  He is within your reach, only a small distance away and available any time of day or night, but YOU must make the journey!  you alone can take the steps to fill your lamps and your hearts.

the Shopkeeper will soon be married.  in this preparation He is to be called the Bridegroom, and the whole village rejoices in preparing for His coming.  He will come when the hour is dark, but no man knoweth we He comes.  he only knows.

to be part of this celebration we must all be wise and prepare now, daily, by having the oil that we need in our lamps for them to be bright when the hour is nigh.

i want everyone of you to be with me at this celebration.  we NEED the Shopkeeper, this Bridegroom.  we need to trust Him and love Him, just as He loves all of us.

did you know that He knows each of us individually?  He does!  He knows you!  He has sacrificed for you.  He knows your name and has fashioned each of your lamps to perform as you need them to.

i also love you.  i see your potential to be amazing, virtuous, women.  you are DAUGHTERS of GOD! with a divine potential within each one of you to inherit all that God has!  by following the Shopkeeper, the Bridegroom- who is my Savior and yours!

you are strong, independent young women who will continue to learn and grow and be able to stand on your own when you need to.

you are-
(at this part i looked at each of the girls and made eye contact and told them a quality about them that i had seen in them prior to or during the week)

you all stand for the values we represent.  let these values: faith, divine nature, individual worth, knowledge, choice & accountability, good works, integrity and virtue be your guides.

ask yourselves:
-will i let this test if my FAITH weaken me or will it help me grow stronger?

-how can i express to others of the reality of my DIVINE NATURE?

-how can i develop my INDIVIDUAL WORTH and not let others define who i am?

-how can i deepen my KNOWLEDGE of the teachings that i receive at school, at home, at church and in the world?

-how do i use the gift of CHOICE (or agency) that god has given me?  and when i choose unwisely, will i accept responsibility and ACCOUNTABILITY for my actions?

-how can i provide GOOD WORKS for others?

-how can i maintain my INTEGRITY in a changing world?

-would a VIRTUOUS woman live the way that i live?

i am here because i love you.  we are all here because we love you and we love each other.  we are sisters of God!  let these wise women, and others that surround you in your lives help you on your path and in your journey.  a wise Heavenly Father placed us within each other's reach.  let us take your hand!

visit with the Shopkeeper- your Savior, and make the choice- will you be foolish or wise?

i have to make that choice daily.  i choose to be wise- i am the WOMAN of FAITH."

officially almost a year behind...again

i have wrestled with this blog thing.  it's not my natural inclination to get things done right away.  i procrastinate, let it pile up and then take care of it....unless its laundry or dishes.  i have a clutter counter in the kitchen, a cluttered desk covered in bills and to-do lists but i just am not good at getting on my blog frequently and updating.  i know i've said it before, but my friend, Charlotte is amazing.  she always has her blog updated, almost immediately after events occur.  me....?  i have like 7, 351 pictures waiting in lieu of being edited and sorted.

i hate this because my parents and other family live far away.  i am sure they would appreciate updates that are not a year behind.  this has been one crazy year i just tackled and i'm sure the coming year is full of it's own craziness but i am hopeful that it wont be so crazy that i feel like i have to often reach up and make sure my head is still attached to me body.

shorty after moving into our new house we began demo...actually i began demo 2 days before we officially closed (shhhhh....yeah i took  a MAJOR risk)  but inside i knew this house needed to be ours.  it just did, we were supposed to live here.  we ripped out trim, outlets, lighting, tile....every room has gotten a face lift.  the kitchen is completely unrecognizable from the day we moved in and there are still a million small (and not-so-small) projects to be done but nothing NEEDS to be done...i can take my time.

a few months after moving in i was called into the bishop's office and before he even opened his mouth i knew he was going to extend me the call to be the young women's president.  i just knew.  that has been crazy busy, huge learning curve, fun...did i say crazy busy?  i have never had so much responsibility and so many meetings before!  i love my girls though and the women i work with.  i think i may just now be getting the hang of most of it.

in april we learned that we were unexpectedly expecting a baby.  after the initial shock (having had to try for up to a year before to get pregnant) we settled into the happy knowledge that our family would be growing by two more little feet.  i was overwhelmed, in the midst of remodeling hell, planning for girl's camp and just...life...adding in sickness, debilitating tiredness, and then at 10 weeks we miscarried.  it was devastating.  i had never realized what a physically and emotionally painful process this could be.  i am still affected by this loss, often thinking of how my belly would be swollen and i would be due in just a few short days to welcome our new little one.  i had been determined that the baby was a girl, and we had already named her Sadie.  the experience was horrible and i never blogged about it.

my sister-in-law lived with us during this time and thank goodness for her she watched the kids many hours while we painted, painted, painted and anytime we needed her.  she was with us for almost a year, and then my brother moved in.  it has been a great opportunity for all of us to grow our relationship and see him make changes in his life that brings him closer to us as a family and to God.

we've had two sisters get married this year, i've helped to throw three bridal showers and decorate for a wedding, 2 cousin weddings, brady got baptized, i have dealt with a lot of my own personal "demons" as i like to call them, figuring out who i need to be, who the Lord wants me to be, and emotional roller coasters- trying to live life with sometimes debilitating depression....

anyways...it has been a year of the refiner's fire.  i am exhausted...can you tell?  thank goodness for wonderful family and friends and a truly amazing husband who has never put me down, picked up my slack and been there through everything there was for me to "throw" at him.  we made it.  i made it.  {deep inhale and exhale} phew.

where am i going with all of this?  i'm getting this dang blog going.  i'm starting from today.  i'll get to all of the yesterdays when i can get to them.

the sacrament. a few thoughts from journaling.

-in remembrance of Christ's atoning sacrifice- which we mock when we sin and are not worthy to partake of the sacrament

-the sacrament is our time to commune with Christ, to recommit ourselves to Him

-Christ instituted the sacrament on the Eve of his crucifixion because it was going to be a gift, a vital way for us to stay connected to Him.

-someday Christ will sit down with us and partake of the sacrament when he comes again on this earth.  He instituted the sacrament during the First Supper and he will end it when we no longer need it when He is once again on the Earth during His millennial reign

-it is through His atonement and power through the sacrament that we find our own personal salvation

-the covenants we make with God involve covenants to DO, not merely refraining from doing things God does not want us to do/that are not good for our spirits.  We are to work rightouseness as well as to avoid evil.

scripture thoughts.

01/02/10- Alma 1:
(27) "They did impart of their substance, every man according to that which he had, to the poor, and the needy, and the sick, and the afflicted; and they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely."
(29) ..."because of their steadiness...they began to...have an abundance of all things whatsoever they stood in need."
(30) ..."they did not set their hearts upon riches; therefore, they were liberal to all...having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need."

01/03/10- Alma 2- Prayer strengthens and preserves us!

01/07/10- Alma 3:26 "And in one year were thousands and tens of thousands of souls sent to the eternal world, that they might reap their rewards according to their works, whether they were good or whether they were bad, to reap eternal happiness or eternal misery, according to the spirit which they listed to obey, whether it be a good spirit or a bad one." (27) "For every man receiveth wages of Him whom  he listeth to obey."

01/08/10- Alma 4: 3 ..."they were awakened to a remembrance of their duty."
(why is it that so often we are reminded of what we SHOULD be doing when trouble afflicts us?  We need to remember God and stay true ALWAYS!)

We walk a fine line between wordliness and godliness.  We must not become prideful of our possessions and seeking only temporal things.  When we become so focused on ourselves we fail to see the needs of others!

(19) ..."That he might preach the word of God unto them, to stir them up in remembrance of their duty, and that he might pull them down, by the word of God, all the pride and craftiness and all the contentions which were among His people, seeing no way that He might reclaim them save it were in bearing down in PURE TESTIMONY against them (A CALL TO REPENTANCE!)

Alma 5: 7 ..."They were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word."

(12) ..."according to His faith there was a mighty change wrought in his heart." (TRUE CONVERSION means CHANGE!) Can people tell when they look at me that I love the Lord?

(14) ASK MYSELF THIS: "Have I recieved His image in my countenance? (15) Do I exercise faith in Him who created me? Do I look forward with an eye of faith?

(16) "I say unto you, can you imagine to yourselves that ye hear the voice of the Lord, saying unto you, in that day: Come unto me ye blessed, for behold your works have been the works of righteousness upon the face of the earth? ...(18) "...Can you imagine yourselves brought before the tribunal of God with your souls filled with guilt and remorse, having a remembrance of all your guilt, yea, a perfect remembrance that ye have set at defiance the commandments of God?"

(26) "Have ye felt to sing the song of redeeming love?"

(27) "Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, ...that ye have been sufficiently humble?"

(28) "are ye stripped of pride? ...if ye are not, ye are not prepared to meet God.  Behold, ye must prepare quickly; for the kingdom of Heaven is soon at hand..."

(29) "are ye stripped of envy?"

(33) "Behold, he sendeth an invitation unto all men, for the arms of mercy are extended towards [you]...repent and I will receive you!"

(34) "Come unto me and ye shall partake of the fruit of the tree of life; ye shall eat and drink of the bread and the waters of life freely."

Alma 5: 37 "A shephard hath called after you and is still calling after you!  ..."if ye do not hearken unto the voice of the good shephard...behold, ye are not the sheep of the good shephard.  (39) And now if ye are not the sheep of the good shephard, of what fold are ye?"

(45) ..."Behold, I testify unto you that I do know that these things whereof I have spoken are true, And how d ye suppose that I know of their surety?" (46) "Behold, I say unto you that they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God.  Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I MIGHT KNOW THESE THINGS OF MYSELF.  And now I do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by His Holy Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in me."

(50) ..."the Son of God cometh in His glory, in His might, majesty, power and dominion.  ...Behold the glory of the King of all the earth; and the King of heaven shall very soon shine forth among all the children of men."

(53) ..."will ye still persist in the wearing of costly apparel ad setting your hearts upon the vain things of the world, upon your riches?"

Alma 6:6 "The children of God were commanded that they should gather themselves together oft, and join in fasting and mighty prayer in behalf of the welfare of the souls of those who knew not God."

01/10/10 Alma 7: 10-14 Talking about Christ- "And behold, He shall be born of Mary at Jerusalem, which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a PRECIOUS and CHOSEN VESSEL, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God." (11) "And He shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith that He will take upon Him the pains and the sicknesses of His people." (12) "And He will take upon Him death, that He may loose the bands of death which bind His people; and He will take upon Him their infirmities, that His bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that He may know according to the flesh how to succor His people according to their infirmities." (13) "Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that He might take upon Him the sins of His people, that He might blot out their transgressions according to the power of His deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me [Alma]." (14) ..."have faith on the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world, WHO IS MIGHTY TO SAVE AND TO CLEANSE FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS."

01/24/10- Alma 9- those who have the light and knowledge of the gospel will be judged more harshly.  We have been given more responsibility and accountability.  God does have matchless love and mercy.

1/26/10- If the wicked do not repent and if they cast out the righteous from among them then the Lord will visit them with famine, wars, and pestilences.  We must be prepared so that we can ride out these "storms."

women's conference may 2007

-be unto others what Christ is to you.  Charity and friendship never faileth!

-protect your home environment.  the home is our sacred place! monitor television, movies and music.  make your home a beautiful haven that your family wants to be in.  temple pictures, Christ, family photos, soothing music, order in the home.

-technology has weakened families. decide together what you're going to allow and not allow in your home!

-when a mother has healthy self-esteem she will be able to pass that on to her children!

-as a mother, take time each day to fill your own well.  read good books!  choose good women as role models and try to adopt things that they do that are good and righteous.  learn lessons from others.  be good to yourself!

-teach your children to be confident in ALL of their abilities in life.

-You have to be IN balance.  balance yourself on a daily basis.  Be a doer of what you say!

-Be a woman of integrity!  Have my thoughts, actions, words and feelings consistent with each other and the principles of the gospel and eternal truth.

-The opposite of integrity is hypocrisy; you can preach the gospel but if you're not living it, it's all for nothing.  (Matthew 5:48)

-We do not always see the fruits of our labors immediately or in this life.  "Stay the course!"

conference thoughts- 2013.

-have a grateful heart in life and with your spouse and children
-satan is working HARD to break up marriages
be on your knees- be seeking for wisdom and guidance
-you have to prepare your mind so that the Lord can pour His spirit into your vessel and aid you
-to succeed in this endeavor (your marriage) your model must be Christ!  He taught us characteristics that we need to join a society of Celestial people where couples love each other. How could a marriage fail if each spouse possesses these qualities?  Such attributes would make us nore attractive, loveable and competent marriage partners. IF we follow Christs' example and counsel, our marriage will be strong and our children will accept our values.

-Prepare BEFORE sacrament.  Prepare BEFORE attending the temple.

-Mosiah 3:19:  Become submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love.  Yield to the enticings of the Spirit, put off the natural man, become like a child, become a saint.

-Be aware of our worldy appetites/tempations, power & wealth (turn your back on the things of the world, overcome pride and humble yourself

-Be aware of:  trying to do TOO much, being vain, wanting worldy things, not seeing my full potential and the potential of others.

The Temple:  If we understand our covenants than we will be protected all of our lives!

-Have your will be God's will

-Your marriage needs nourishment!  If you don't feed it, like anything else it will die.

-Key Practices:  Prayer, Trust, Virtue, divine presence (the presence of the Divine in your marriage), tithing, parenthood (brings the greatest of all happiness.  Fathers learn how to take care of families; mothers learn how to forget themselves).

-marriage is the joint quest of the beautiful, the good and divine.

-our greatest gift that we can give to our children is a strong marriage.

-sometimes in our lives we have to endure some "bumps" before we can have the greatest joy

-to have constant enrichment in marriage: think about your spouse first!  support them!  love them! serve them!

-how deep is my commitment to my companion aside from my other interests?

after more thought...

so, i think i may have done this before, but after MORE thought i decided NOT to go private.  i don't know...i think i have a problem!  i just love being able to browse other people's blogs and don't want mine to be "un-browsable" (because i have so many great ideas, you know! lol).

SO, NOT going private.  SORRY!  at least it will be easier for you to visit my blog without having to log in!

i have really MISSED this blog a lot.  i keep up with a few of my closest friends' blogs on a fairly regular basis.  they inspire me.  they make me laugh.  they make me miss them.  and they make me want to catch up on this darn old blog of mine!

as each month has passed by without a post i have become more and more discouraged.  i have had so many remodeling projects on this house and it is still so far from being done.  i haven't wanted to post any pictures before everything was perfect, but alas, it's not going to happen for a while....probably never.  so time to start posting!

you'll have to excuse the LONG OVERDUE catch-up.  i am back in October here.  must do everything chronologically!

so, buckle your seat belts friends, it's going to be an exciting couple of weeks as i catch up on our "life through the blog!"

feeling peace from within.

amidst the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, moving into and remodeling a new home, having three small children along with my normal household responsibilities....i have taken a long break from blogging.  at times i have viewed this blog as a burden- something to cross off my never ending "to-do" list.  now that i have spent quite some time without sharing our world i have realized that i miss it.  i have realized that this blog truly is our family history.  i can look back on so many memories and also connect again with thoughts that i had and trials or events in our life that touched me at a particular time.

i still have so many projects looming in my future, but i'm tackling them slowly.  our house is taking on a lived in feel and it is becoming home.  as i sit in our living room early this morning before the sun rises i am grateful for the warmth that we feel here.  i am home.  this is where i belong.  this is where i can gather my family around me.  i feel peace at heart knowing that i have a Father in Heaven who knew this need within me and i am so grateful to have a relationship with Him, and my Savior.  all things come in their time, and although the last year and a half have been trying for me since we left our home in Twin Falls i finally feel that we have settled in and that we are where we are needed.

i hear a baby stirring and need to get brady off to school....

i have finally chosen to act upon a persistent feeling that i have had for about four years now.  over that time i have continued to be prodded by the spirit that i need to relinquish the part of me that loves to stay up late and wake up as late as possible.  i have growing children now with very different needs than they did when i became a new mother.  i feel like i am entering a new phase: a phase of maturity.  this is the last year of my 20's...a year to blossom into the woman that my parents and leaders gently shaped me into being.  a year to finally allow myself to truly begin to be molded by the Savior.

the persistent thought has been that if i could arise and take care of myself before all others, that although this may be very hard and a sacrifice for me at first (and maybe even forever) that i will have so much more to offer my family throughout the day.  i hate the feeling of being rushed from one thing to another because i was not ready, i was not prepared.  i hate having to spend my first hour with my children in the morning rushing from shower, trying to blow dry my hair and slap on my make-up while making sure baby is not getting into anything, getting fed and changed themselves and not being glued to the television all morning.  i hate that on the days that i actually do get a shower it takes half to morning just to accomplish getting ready, and the other days i am in "scrub mode."

i want to wake up and feel alive.  i want to begin my day with power and intention.  there are not many things that i hate more than having to get out of my warm bed before i am ready in the morning, but i can affirm that when i force myself up and get my blood pumping first thing in the morning through exercising my body and my mind i feel an invigorating confidence all day long that helps me be a better me.

so, here's to fresh starts.  here's to 2013, the year that i shed the selfishness that i've been tenanciously clinging to, trying to avoid "growing up."  sometimes i feel as if i've just been playing house the last 7 years as a mother and 10 years as a wife.  i am awaking now to an understanding that i can be so much more!  to myself and my family!

and just as my children strive when there is order and routine in our home, so do i.  we have never really had house projects other than landscaping to attend to.  our first home was built and ready to move into.  this new house of ours has been a completely different picture which i grossly underestimated in terms of time, and challenge.  i am a creature of comforts, i like to have my house orderly and when it is in chaos i feel like i am in chaos.  although there is still much to do i learning to prioritize and not become distracted.  i am learning to allow myself to focus on one thing (or room) at a time.  i am thankful that my children are resilient and that my family is patient!  what an incredible feeling of satisfaction it is to complete a room and step back and witness the transformation.  i am so thankful that i was taught young by my mother and father that hard work is good work.

i've got a LOT of updating to do!
